Sailing Academy

Our Sailing Academy runs throughout the spring and summer school holidays for Looked After Children from Portsmouth, Southampton, and Hampshire. The Sailing Academy provides a long term programme giving the young people the opportunity to fully develop their sailing skills and progress over time.

Those who attend the sailing academy have the opportunity to sail around Portsmouth Harbour, navigate the busy Solent and occasionally stop off on the Isle of Wight for an ice cream!

The Boats

To teach sailing we use two Hawk 20 keel boats.  The Hawk  design allows to us teach groups of up to six young people on a stable yet reactive platform.  The boats react well to the wind and tide yet are safe and dry enabling us to teach sailing in a range of weathers and conditions.

Residentials

We also run sailing residentials in Chichester Harbour which has recently been recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty.  The young people sail their boats from Portsmouth Harbour across the open sea and into Chichester Harbour where they spend a few nights camping and enjoying sailing in one of the busiest and most beautiful harbours in the country, before sailing back to Portsmouth a few days later.

Qualifications

Young people attend the Academy over a number of years working their way through the RYA scheme. The RYA provides several awards which are internationally recognised, through the academy we aim to provide the opportunity to gain the following keelboat awards.

  • Level 1 Start Sailing: getting afloat. An introduction to the sport, covering the minimum knowledge required to get afloat under supervision.
  • Level  2 Basic Skills: the foundation of the sport. Becoming a competent sailor in light winds.
  • Seamanship Skills: sail independently. How to handle a boat in all circumstances and solve problems afloat.
  • Assistant Instructor: help others. First step on the ladder to a career as a sailing instructor

Last season we had our first young person volunteering as an Assistant Instructor teaching the other young people, a real mark of the success of the project.

Referrals

Participation in the Sailing Academy is organised through the local Social Care Looked After who send out invitations to all qualifying young people at the start of each season.
